Case study, from 2006

Cover by the day, bought online.

Borrow a car for a weekend. Insure it for a weekend. From early 2006 we built and developed the system behind TempCover: short-term car and van insurance, quoted, paid for and documented online, and sold mainly through insurance agents.

The journey

Four steps to cover.

A policy needs a lot of detail. The system made it quick and accurate to give.

  1. Tell us who and what

A secure, step-by-step form. The address comes from the postcode, the vehicle from its registration.

  2. Choose an insurer

Quotes from a range of insurers. The price quoted is the price paid.

  3. Pay

On a payment page hosted by the payment provider, so card details never touch the website.

  4. Drive

Policy documents as a PDF straight away, and by email.

Under the hood

Every check, built in.

Behind the form sat address and vehicle lookups, fraud screening, hosted payments and daily files to the Motor Insurance Database.

  1. Check

    Lookups and screening

    • Royal Mail postcode file, with our own lookup service
    • CarweB vehicle data by registration
    • ABI vehicle codes when a car or van is not found
    • Three-stage fraud screening
  2. Quote

    TempCover's system

    • Quotes from a range of insurers
    • Agent accounts and commission
    • Stored quotes to pick up later
    • Add-on products
  3. Pay

    Hosted payment page

    • Card payments through The Logic Group
    • A token kept for the policy, not the card
    • Card security handled by the payment provider
  4. Issue

    Policy documents and files

    • PDF documents to download at once
    • The same documents by email
    • Daily file to the Motor Insurance Database
    • Daily accounting file to TempCover

Built for agents

A sales tool for agents.

Customers could buy direct, but the system was built first for insurance agents, who registered to sell TempCover and earned commission on every policy written.

Over the years we added add-on products and rebranded versions for several of TempCover's key intermediaries.

  • A sign-in and private admin area for each agent
  • Stored quotes to pick up and finish
  • Commission rates and minimums set by the agent
  • Rebranded versions for key intermediaries

By the numbers

Short cover. No shortcuts.

Three-stage fraud screening improved the loss ratio for the product, and payments never put a card number on the website.

  • 1 to 28days of fully comprehensive cover
  • 21 to 75driver ages accepted, depending on the insurer
  • 3stages of fraud screening
  • 0card numbers stored on the website's server
